FeaturesThe DIY Tattooer Point Park News Service2 years ago2 years ago03 mins By: Virginia Garner Philadelphia native and Pittsburgh resident, 23-year-old Courtney Smith, laughs while cleaning her gloved hands with an alcohol preparation pad. Making sureher hands are clean is the first step in her tattooing process, which she has honed overthe past year, having tattooed herself and close friends. Smith begins to poke the ankle skin of 24-year-old Rachel Hines with aneedle, using the “Stick-n-Poke” method of tattooing, which mimics the movementsof a traditional tattoo gun, but without automation. “All tattoos hurt, but since thisone is small, it shouldn’t be too bad,” Hines said. “I’ve been getting tattoos for six yearsnow, this will be my sixteenth.” Smith makes sure to poke from different angles, so that the ink gets deepinto the skin and can be dark enough to be seen. “My goal is to be able to tattoo aroundthe world,” Smith said. “I like the fact that a bunch of people are going to walk around withmy art on them forever.” Once the poking process is complete with multiple layers of ink, Smith cleansthe area with a clean towel. “I’ve designated my ankle as a place where my friendscan practice their tattooing at home,” Hines explained as she showed her mushroomand eyeball designs on her ankle. Smith takes a photo of her creation for her tattoo page on Instagram,“baby.flea” where she posts her designs, art, and completed tattoo work. “It’dbe cool to have enough clients so I can tattoo full time and travel to new places wherepeople want to get tats from me,” Smith said. Finally, a protective covering is placed over the tattoo, as Smith positionsa sanitary shield over Hines’ ankle. Hines will have to keep the tattoo clean and usegentle moisturizers so that the design stays fresh and healthy. With her sixteenth tattoo complete, Hines loves it; “I’m so happy to havemy good friend’s art on me forever.” She’s excited to help Smith accelerate her tattooingcareer.“Overall, I just want to reach people with my art,” Smith said. “And friends lettingme tattoo them does just that.” Post navigation Previous: Stray bullet strikes through student’s off-campus apartment windowNext: Café Momentum Offers a Different Kind of Restaurant
