Fog spills across the ground as shrieks echo from somewhere up ahead. The tunnel into Kennywood’s Phantom Fall Fest swallows you in with pulsing strobe lights and sinister laughter, a threshold that signals the summer park has shed its cheerful skin for something darker.
What most visitors don’t see, however, is the work that goes into creating these screams, from makeup artists and scare actors to management and planning. As Pittsburgh’s Halloween tradition continues to grow, the artistry and labor that bring it to life, along with the humans behind the monstrous looks, reveal just how much work goes into every single scare.
